Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society
The Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society (LKTS) negotiates on behalf of the We Wai Kai Nation. The LKTS table is in Stage 5 negotiations to conclude a treaty. In 2019 the parties signed the Tripartite Commitment Agreement: We Wai Kai Transition to Stage 5 Negotiations Under the BC Treaty Process. We Wai Kai Nation represents the Cape Mudge Band. We Wai Kai entered the treaty negotiations process as part of the Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society (formerly the Kwakiutl Laich-Kwil-Tach Council of Chiefs), and began negotiating separately in 2014. Its traditional territory is around Campbell River, Quadra Island, and surrounding inlets. There are approximately 1,165 members.
We Wai Kai has overlapping and/or shared territory with its First Nation neighbours: Da’naxda’xw Awaetlala, Homalco, Klahoose, K’ómoks, Kwiakah, MamalilikullaQwe’Qwa’Sot’Em,’Namgis, Snaw-naw-AS, Qualicum, Tla’amin, Tlowitsis, Snuneymuxw, and Wei Wai Kum.
