OVERVIEW

As part of its public education and information mandate, the BC Treaty Commission occasionally hosts or partners on conferences and forums. The Commission aims to share information, raise awareness, educate, inform and support building capacity within First Nations approaching self-governance and treaty implementation.

In this section, you will find information shared at forums and engagements, some include presentations, and/or videos. Each presentation includes the author, whom the information belongs to, these are not distribution or for use for profit.

First Nations Ratification Forum

The Ratification Forum is a one-day virtual session where presenters from different nations share their past and current experience related to the ratification process.

Eligibility and Enrolment (E&E) Roundtable

As First Nations progress and advance negotiations toward conclusion and ratification of treaties and agreements, understanding the complexities of Eligibility and Enrolment (E&E) is becoming important. The roundtable included sharing experiences and insights on E&E and ratification from both Modern Treaty Nations, advance negotiating First Nations and government officials. Speakers also presented on the importance of nationhood, building capacity, and the significance of citizenship in shaping the First Nations’ self-determination and self-government.

Enforcement Forum

The purpose of this engagement forum was to discuss the challenges around enforcing, prosecuting, and adjudicating Indigenous laws, and explore new mechanisms to address these issues, in order for Indigenous self-government and reconciliation to be meaningful and successfully implemented.

Multi-Community Governance Forum

First Nations governance models and mechanisms are at the heart of self-determination and self-government. This forum brought together multi-community First Nations, legal and international experts to discuss international and domestic Indigenous governance models, mechanisms, constitution and governance building.

Modern Treaty Self Governance Forum

Presentations and speakers covered an array of treaty implementation experiences and challenges, Treaty First Nations governance, Nation-building, socio-economic benefits of treaty, and Nation-to-Nation protocols on overlapping and shared territories, etc.

Ratification Forum

Bringing together First Nations and representatives from Elections BC to share information on: First Nations' ratification experiences, lessons learned, dispelling misinformation, etc.

Beyond Section 35

The Treaty Commission partnered with the Institute on Governance to engage in discussions around: section 35 of the Constitution Act, beyond litigation, frameworks for a New Relationship and Reconciliation, etc.

Forging Linkages and Finding Solutions

Discussions on: governance, economic development and capcity-building, etc.

Preparing for The Day After Treaty

Discussions and presentations on: effective negotiations, ratification, experiences from Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Nisga'a Lisims Government, Grand Council of Crees, etc.
